Growing up I never got the opportunity to go on many road trips. As a matter of fact, before high school, the longest "road trip" I had ever been on was to Dallas from Houston. If you are familiar with Texas, then you know this "road trip" is only 4 hours.

After my sophomore year of college, during the summer, I got the opportunity to road trip from Houston, Texas all the way to Portland, Maine. That is 28 hours and about 2,000 miles!

When I first got asked to go on this trip, I immediately said no. I figured I would be miserable and just dying to get back home.

I finally was talked into going on the road trip because we decided we weren't going to be driving 28 hours straight there. Instead, we split the trip into four days. This was the best thing we could've done, because we were able to stop in such cool places and sight see. This was something I had never done before. I saw more in four days then I could've seen in a summer with flying to each city and state we stopped in.

First Stop: Memphis, Tennessee

I had been to Memphis before but only to go visit St. Jude. I had the opportunity to walk down Beale Street, stay at The Peabody and even go eat at popular chicken restaurant.

Second Stop: Charleston, West Virginia

I didn't really know what to expect of West Virginia... I figured I would see some coal mines but that was really it. But West Virginia ended up exceeding any expectations I had because it was so beautiful. I had never been anywhere like it. Charleston was a cute town, but I enjoyed driving through the state much more.

Third Stop: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia was probably my favorite stop, because there was so much history there. It was amazing. From seeing the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and George Washington's house, I was overwhelmed, because I had never been around so much history in one place. We walked around Philly and learned so much. I wish we could had stayed longer.

Final Stop: Portland, Maine

The fourth day arrived, and we had finally made it. The state was beautiful and it had certain charm to it. This certain charm was something I had ever experienced.

We ended up going to Maine at the perfect time, because it was oyster season. Before this trip I had never tried an oyster but I was already so far out of my comfort zone that I figured I needed to try one. Well, I tried one and I liked it! I was shocked.

After I made it back home, I was able to reflect on what I had just accomplished and I was so proud of myself and wanted to do it all again. It was crazy to me that I felt this way considering I had felt the complete opposite at the beginning of the trip. I hope more people get to do a road trip like this someday.
